123 years ago this week, the Winchester Journal reported in its May 18, 1898 issue on the dedication of the new Friends Church Building in Winchester. In May of 1873, at the request of Thomas Moorman, Thomas Ward and others, Elkanah Beard was brought to Winchester to preach the Gospel and organize a Friends Meeting. For a time, services were held in City Hall. The minister was compensated by furnishing him a home to live in.
