When Skip Wrede was growing up, for 15 to 20 years of his life, he was known as Becky’s brother.

Skip is the general manager of Wrede Rocks & Mulch in Lafayette, and one of four brothers who run the company, which includes the flagship Wrede & Sons Excavating, Inc. store in Monticello.

The Lafayette store will start its 15th year in business in August, while the Monticello location has been in business for more than 30 years.

Rebecca Wrede-Shook was the big sister, and the oldest child of Robert Sr. and Joyce. She set the bar high early for her brothers to follow in her footsteps.

Becky died at age 56 from aggressive breast cancer, about seven years ago, but left a mark on the world years before, when she was elected as president of Girls Nation in 1970.

She had already been elected governor of Girls State in Indiana and the rules disallowed her from running for president of Girls Nation.

“They let her run when they saw how good she was,” Skip Wrede said Tuesday.

The company’s success has always been thanks to a continuum of up to three generations of family, working together.
