JASPER COUNTY — A Tippecanoe County man tried to double his earnings after he allegedly attempted to redeem a winning lottery ticket twice.
Michael Hayes, 30, of Lafayette, was arrested and taken into custody June 20 by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office on charges of theft, a Class A misdemeanor.
According to police records, the incident took place in March when Hayes visited a fuel station at Interstate 65 and US 24 in Jasper County, and allegedly tried to cash in an already-redeemed lottery ticket worth $100.
Police said it was determined through an investigation that Hayes had already received cash for the same winning lottery ticket at a fuel station in Lafayette.
Police said that prior to leaving the Lafayette store, he not only took his winnings but also grabbed the lottery payout ticket off the counter.
