Talented writing skills must run in the Parrish family of Rensselaer. Elizabeth Parrish, a fourth-grade student at Van Rensselaer Primary School, is now the second family member to win the Indiana Statehood Day Essay Contest. Parrish's older brother Jacob won the essay contest in 2011, and now Elizabeth is the proud winner in the family for the 2013 contest.

The Indiana Statehood Day Essay contest is for fourth grade students throughout Indiana and in conjunction with the Indiana Center for the Book and the Indiana State Library, the Indiana State House Tour Office hosted the essay contest to commemorate Indiana Statehood Day 2013, a celebration of Indiana's 197th birthday. This year's theme for the essay contest was “Hoosier Bicentennial Heros."
