MOROCCO — North Newton has added two familiar names to its high school athletic department this summer.
Former Lady Spartans standout and 1,000-point scorer Jenny Spillers returns to the sideline in girls’ basketball, this time as coach. She replaces Alex Gross, who served two years at North Newton.
The Spartans went 11-10 last season under Gross, whose 2017-18 squad finished 5-16 in her first season. They return all five starters from last year’s squad, including leading scorer Jamie Will (11.2 ppg.) and point guard Mackendzie Dresbaugh (9.2 ppg.).
Spillers spear-headed former coach Bob Gonczy’s Lady Spartans teams in the late 1990s. The Spartans won a sectional championship in Spillers’ final year in 1996.
Former football, wrestling and baseball coach Mike Atwood will also make his return to Morocco after he was tabbed the school’s athletic director. He becomes the fifth athletic director in the last seven years, replacing Jerry Taylor, who serves as AD and assistant principal at North Newton.
Atwood taught and coached at Delphi for nearly 20 years after leaving North Newton in the late 1990s.
North Newton announced last month that it has hired Sam Zachery, a former football assistant with the Spartans, as its new boys’ basketball coach. Zachery, a Saint Joseph’s College graduate, coached football for two years at Tri-County High School, but was recruited to play basketball at Saint Joe.
