Cell tower destroyed, cell service in southern Newton County affected

With winds exceeding more than 70 mph at times on Oct. 20, parts of Newton County are still feeling the effect from the storm. The high winds severely damaged a cell tower in the area of Foresman. Ever since part of the tower was blown over into a nearby cornfield, cell phone service, especially in the southern part of the county has been troublesome. Representatives from Crown Castle, who own and installed the tower for Verizon were on scene last week to assess the situation. Crown Castle informed the Newton County Enterprise that the tower was so severely damaged that it could not be repaired, but work on installing a new tower would green lighted. As of Monday, the Verizon team was still gathering and staging all of its materials to perform restoration efforts.
