MONTICELLO — After several years of planning, the White County Health Department will move to a new location Tuesday.
It will relocate from its current building at 315 N. Illinois St. to 902 Foxwood Court, just off West Fisher Street behind Monticello Marketplace.
“This has been going on for a couple years at least,” said Linda Lindsay, the health department’s office manager.
Lindsay said the White County Commissioners approved the move, which will take place over a few days while everything is taken out of the downtown-area location and moved north near Rural King.
She said the department staff will remain the same. At this point, Lindsay said, only the health department is moving — not the other two departments, environmental and emergency management, that also occupy the space.
White County Commissioner David Diener said the commission decided to move the health department based on the efficiency of the new building.
“We had the opportunity to buy the doctor’s office,” Diener said, noting that the new property is already fitted for all the needs of a health department since it was formerly a medical office.
According to the real estate database Zillow, the building on Foxwood Court “is set up with five exam rooms, break room, two full bathrooms, large reception room with cathedral ceilings (and) multiple work spaces.”
The department’s current facilities near downtown Monticello were converted into a space for the health department in the mid-2000s. The building had previously served as the White County Jail, Diener said, so it was not originally capable of serving all the health department’s needs without renovation.
The department is set to start moving into its new location Tuesday, and complete the move within a few days. During those few days, there may be a window of time when the department is not open, Lindsay said.
