Emergency crews are still on scene of a train derailment on the outskirts of  Rockfield in Carroll County.

At approximately 8:42 AM Thursday morning, a Norfolk & Southern train was traveling southbound when six cars derailed.

According to the Carroll County EMA Director, it appears a rail may have given way.

Three of the cars were empty tank cars and three were gondola cars. There was no leakage from any of the cars, and there was no hazard to residents.

The EMA Director also noted that the contaminated soil presents no danger to anyone at this time and no evacuations are expected.

Units from the Tippecanoe County HAZMAT Team assisted in this incident along with the Carroll County Sheriff's Office.

The main rail will be reopened soon and no interruption of service is expected.

It will likely take several days to clean up because they have to bring three cranes in from out of town to remove the cars.
