What does this business do? We show movies.
What was the impetus for opening this business? We wanted to keep the historic cinema open to serve the community.
What is the best thing about being located in Rensselaer? The people. This town has some of the best people. They are kind, honest and supportive.
What is the biggest challenge? Getting the movies I want to show. Hollywood isn’t always the easiest to work with.
When is your busiest time of the year? Holidays and the end of school seem to be the busiest times and, of course, when we have a great movie.
What is the most popular thing you sell/service you provide? Popcorn. I think we have the best popcorn in town.
What is the thing you most like to do as part of your business? I love to talk to the people after they have seen a movie. I have had many good discussions. I also love talking to the kids after the move. I always ask, with the hand gesture included, one thumb or was it a two thumbs up movie.
What is the best thing about owning your own business? I have to say the people. I have gained a lot of new friends running the business.
What is the biggest downside? You would think I would get to see the movies, but no; for the most part I do not have the time to sit and watch a movie. There is always something that has to be taken care of. Yes, I have seen a few but mostly in bits and pieces over the time the movie is running.
What is the biggest misconception about your business? People think I get to keep all the money from the ticket sales. Most of the time, the movie company takes 58 percent and up of each ticket sale. Sometimes I don’t know what percent they will take until after the movie has been shown.
How would you describe your business philosophy? I like to make people happy and treat them fairly.
When it comes time to retire is there a family member who will be taking over for you? Well, since I have no family in this town, I think it would be hard to say yes.
How has your business changed over time? We have gone from only second-run movies to first-run with some second-run movies. When we first took over the cinema, we were lucky to get 20 people a week. Now we have certainly surpassed the 20 people a week. Thank you, God!
What advice would you give someone thinking about starting a business? Be prepared to work harder then you ever thought you would.
