WHEATFIELD — As part of the graduation week festivities, several KVHS athletes were honored for their performances in the classroom and on the field.
The Athletes of the Year were Catherine Cavinder and Garrett Brewster. Both are multi-sport standouts for the Kougars.
Cavinder, who has participated in Cross-Country, track, basketball and soccer will continue her career at the Air Force Academy. Cavinder also received the U.S. Marines Award.
Brewster, who has participated in track and tennis will be attending Purdue University in the fall.
The Athlete of the Year Awards are given annually to the male and female athletes that are elected by the head coaches from each sport. To even be nominated, a Kougar athlete has to meet the following criteria: 1) Be a graduating senior; 2) Participate in multiple sports; 3) Possess and maintain good academic grades; and, 4) Have a positive outlook and attitude.
All head coaches from the Kankakee Valley High School Athletic Department are asked to nominate qualifying athletes from their respective sports. A list of nominees was then sent back to the coaches who were asked to rank them by how well each met the criteria.
Named as Scholar Athletes of the year in addition to Brewster and Cavinder, were Taylor Miller, Cameron Sheehy and Aubrey Toppen.
