EAST LANSING, Mich. — The standout track and field seniors of Covenant Christian competed on Saturday, June 8, in East Lansing in the Midwest Meet of Champions. Carson Bakker and Grace DeBoer represented Indiana in the by-invitation-only meet held on the campus of Michigan State University. Both received bids after representing Covenant Christian at the Indiana State Track and Field competition. Both were invited after being named Indiana All-Stars.
The Midwest Meet of Champions features top track and field athletes from Indiana, Ohio and Michigan.
Bakker, named an Indiana All-Star, along with Wawasee’s Luke Griner and West Lafayette’s Joe Peterson, reached the finals of the boys’ 800-meter run. He finished eighth overall with a time of 2:00.31. Nick Foster of Michigan won the event with a time of 1:51.94. The American high school record stands at 1:50.55.
DeBoer competed as a member of the 4x800-meter relay, along with Sarah Greer of Lawrence North, Annalise James of Lowell and Maddie Mirro of Hamilton Southeastern. The Indiana quartet finished third with a time of 9:23.02 with DeBoer running first for the team. Ohio finished first with a time of 9:08.73. The national high school record for the event stands at 8:53.67.
“What a way to end both their high school careers,” said Coach Travis Conley. “The dedication Carson and Grace put in over the fours years was simply remarkable. I wish them success in all their future endeavors.”
DeBoer and Bakker have been coached at Covenant Christian by Conley and Jay Starkey, who have turned out several standout competitors despite the school not having a track to practice on.
