Fire call

Firefighters tend to a fire in the Martinton area this afternoon.

Martinton Fire, with the help of several local departments, stopped the potential spread of a three-car garage fire Thursday afternoon.
Fire chief Jeff Meyers said the family came back from shopping about 12:30 and 10 minutes later looked outside and saw the garage on fire.
He said the car caught fire and was so burnt up that “we couldn’t establish what was wrong with the car.” He said the owners said there was no known problem with it.
The fire totally destroyed the detached garage, which had two cars and housed a lot of other items.
Meyers said the fire did catch a nearby tree on fire, but the firefighters got the fire contained. He said there was a nearby propane tank, and the house only got heat damage to the siding.
“It took a lot of manpower.”
Responding to the call was Ashkum, Papineau, Crescent-Iroquois, Danforth, Chebanse Township, and St. Anne, with Aroma Park covering the Martinton area while its force was on scene.
All crews were back at the station by 5 p.m., he said.
