After a stellar start to the regular season and an undefeated streak that last well into the season, the Hoopeston Area Cornjerkers slowed a bit as the regular season wrapped up last week.
The Cornjerkers took the field against Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin Thursday at Rossville-Alvin Elementary School.
BHRA took a very early lead when Drew Reifsteck utilized his speed to take advantage of a misplayed ball and scored a goal in the first 10 seconds of the game.
The Cornjerkers regrouped after this, but were unable to keep the Blue Devils at bay as Reifsteck again found the back of net when he scored on a penalty kick following a foul that occurred in the box.
BHRA would round out the first half with a goal by Cameron Douglass off a rebound at the 15 minute mark.
The Cornjerkers went into the half trailing BHRA 3-0.
Hoopeston Area’s Neil Williams got the team onto the board 22 minutes into the second half when scored on a rebound.
Goalkeeper Josh Delfino saved a penalty kick by Reifsteck at 12:43, but the Cornjerkers were called for encroachment and Reifsteck was able to score his third goal of the night on the do-over.
Hoopeston Area wouldn’t find the goal again for the rest of the game and fell to BHRA 4-1.
Hoopeston Area finishes the regular season with a 14-4-1 record and a 7-1 record in the Vermilion Valley Conference. The Cornjerkers will be adding another banner for winning the VVC title this year.
Hoopeston Area now moves into postseason play and will face BHRA again in the IHSA regional at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
