Hoopeston Area's undefeated soccer season came to an end Monday when the Cornjerkers came up against Herscher.

The Cornjerkers held their own against Herscher throughout the first half, going into the half tied 0-0.

However, Herscher turned up the pressure in the second half and scored four goals while holding the Cornjerkers scoreless through the rest of the game.

Hoopeston Area's season record now stands at 12-1-1 with a Vermilion Valley Conference record of 5-0.

The Cornjerkers will travel to Oakwood Tuesday. The game starts at 4:30 p.m.

Unity High School gave the Hoopeston Area High School Cornjerkers their biggest challenge of the season when the teams met in Hoopeston Sept. 17.

Unity’s Evan Bacer scored within the first four minutes of the game, scoring on an assist from Andrew Miller.

Unity then held Hoopeston Area scoreless for much of the remainder of the first half.

The Cornjerkers finally reached the scoreboard with a little over four minutes left in the first half when Brennan Granados scored on an assist by Carson Alwardt.

Both teams’ defense then took over for the remainder of the game and the match ended in a 1-1 tie.

Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin also posed a challenge for Hoopeston Area when they met in Hoopeston Sept. 18.

Hoopeston Area’s Carson Alwardt scored on an assist from Lucas Hofer at the 34:49 minute mark and the Cornjerkers remained in control for most of the first half until BHRA’s Drew Reifsteck, on a throw-in by Cameron Douglass, with less than three minutes left in the half.

Reifsteck found the back of the goal again around the 30 minute mark in the second half, scoring on a header from Douglass’ on a corner kick.

BHRA held their 2-1 lead until Rhys Root scored on an assist from Ethan Smith at the 15:12 mark to tie the game at 2-2.

Lucas Hofer put the game away with 4:10 left on the clock when he scored a goal on a header off a Ethan Smith throw-in.

The Cornjerkers went on to win 3-2.

Hoopeston Area’s junior varsity team would also defeat BHRA, winning 5-0.

The Cornjerkers returned to their dominating ways Thursday when they shut-out Georgetown-Ridge Farm/Westville 3-0.

Rhys Root started off the game with a goal on an assist from Brennan Granados at the 33:28.

Cameron Flint followed this up at the 26:55 mark with a goal on a pass from Ethan Smith.

Ben Brown brought the first half to a close with a goal at 5:25 on a pass from Flint.

That was all the offense Hoopeston Area needed to win the game.

Hoopeston Area earned another shut-out during their next outing Saturday at home against Teutopolis.

Brennan Granados scored at the 15:36 mark on a corner kick from Rhys Root.

While the Cornjerkers did have many chances to score throughout the rest of the game, but weren’t able to find the goal again.

Hoopeston Area’s defense held Teutopolis scoreless for the rest of the game. Goalkeeper Joshu Delfino earned the win goal for the Cornjerkers, racking up his sixth shut-out of the year.

As of Saturday, Hoopeston Area has a 12-0-1 season record, with a 5-0 record in the Vermilion Valley Conference.
