The Hoopeston Area Cornjerkers faced off against Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin, for second time in less than a week, in the first round of regionals Wednesday in Oakwood.
BHRA had defeated Hoopeston Area the last time the two met and the Cornjerkers were looking to repay the favor.
The Cornjerkers took a 2-0 lead into the half after Lucas Hofer scored on a deflection and Rhys Root scored on a free-kick from 25 yards out.
But the Blue Devils weren’t ready to go gently into that good night.
BHRA tied the game at 2 after Cameron Douglass scored on a pass from Drew Reifsteck and Reifsteck followed that with a goal of his own on a header from a rebound.
Root found the back of the goal on a penalty kick to pull Hoopeston Area ahead, but BHRA wasn’t down for the count yet.
Elijah Tidwell scored on a cross assist from Keanu King to tie the game at 3.
The game went into overtime and Tidwell stepped up for the Blue Devils again, scoring on a pass from Reifsteck.
Hoopeston Area went into the second overtime period trailing BHRA, but Cameron Flint scored a goal on a turnover for the Cornjerkers.
Overtime ended with a 4-4 tie. That meant the game would be decided by penalty kicks.
Hoopeston Area overcame BHRA in the penalty phase 3-2 and won the regional match 5-4.
They will take on Uni High from Urbana for the regional championship at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oakwood Grade School, 408 S. Scott St. in Oakwood.
